PUPPY CARECongratulation on your new puppy! We hope to help you enjoy your pet. To keep your puppy heathly, we recommend the following routine preventive health measures: DHPP vaccination: (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus). Vaccinate at 8, 12, 16, and 20 weeks. Even if your puppy received vaccinations from a breeder or pet shop before it was 8 weeks old, a booster is needed every four weeks until it is at least 20 weeks old. Annual revaccination with a single dose is recommended. Rabies vaccination: Is due at 3 months and is good for one year. Bordatella vaccination: Ask about vaccination for "kennel cough" if your puppy is going to be kenneled or go to puppy classes or dog shows. Lyme vaccination: As the threat of Lyme Disease has increased, we strongly recommend giving the Lyme vaccination. The vaccination series begins with a single vaccine that should be boosted in more that 2 weeks but less than 3 weeks. Annual revaccination with a single dose is recommended. Fecal examination: Please bring a stool sample to your puppy's next visit to help us identify the presence of roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and other intestinal parasites before they become a problem for your puppy. Heartworm Prevention: ( Once-a-month oral prevention for heartworm disease, a parasite transmitted through mosquito bites.) Heartworm medication should be given from April to December or, in families with children under12 years of age, 12 months a year. Puppies under 6 months of age do not need to be tested prior to receiving preventive medicine. They will be tested along with other adult dogs the following spring. Heartworm protection also provides protection against some intestinal parasites. Please ask your veterinarian to help you choose between Heartguard (heartworm and intestinal parasites only) or Sentinel (heartworm, intestinal parasites and fleas). Spay or neuter: At 6 months of age this is recommended to prevent both overpopulation and some health problems. HomeAgain: A microchip identification system is
now available to help in the recovery of your pet should he/she become
lost or stolen anywhere in the United States. |
