Vitamin E

Both vitamin E and Selenium must be present in adequate amounts for the animal to function properly. The Northeast has soil deficient in Selenium, which results in crops grown in this area being deficient in Selenium. Therefore rations must be supplemented with vitamin E and Selenium, depending on the severity of the deficiency.

A lack of vitamin E and Selenium:

1. results in decreased fertilization rates
2. increased retained placentas
3. increased somatic cell counts
4. increased muscle wasting in adult cows

In cows a lack of vitamin E and Selenium causes nutritional degeneration of muscles. This may cause weakness in the legs but more importantly and inability to suckle properly.
